To whom this may concern
My name is Jenet Langjahr, Nurse Practitioner in California and my husband Stephen is an Anatomy/Physiology Professor of 34 years at AV College. Many of you may remember my son Derek was injured snowboarding in May 2003 and had a severe SCI at T-12 (pulverized requiring cage/spinal leak twice) ASIA A. In Novemeber of 2004 we went to China for OEG cell transplantation by Dr. Huang. We had visited Dr. Huang in April of 2004 and went into surgery with him to make sure Derek would receive cultured cells, not tissue or debri and to observe his surgery skills.
Derek awoke from surgery with new sensation to his calves and a few days later was sweating to his toes. It has been 15 months since his surgery and I would like everyone to know his progress. He has been videotaped and recorded by Physical Therapists at Northridge Hospital in California and a neurokinesiologist since his injury. We are very concerned that correct information is given to the public.
Derek had stabilized for 6 months before China. He has advanced from 2 bilateral KFO braces to 2 bilateral AFO braces. He can lock both knees. He is walking with a walker but is currently being advanced to a 4 quad cane. He can walk with forearm crutches. He walks on the treadmill for 15 minutes during his therapy and then on a stationary bike for 15 minutes with control of his upper legs.
For the past 5 months Derek has had bladder control by tapping. We cancelled his catheter order with great excitement. Since he has regained this control he has not had any UTI infections and had gained 20 pounds ( currently at 142lbs.)
Derek has not had any ankle or foot movement to date. We are hopeful that with his continual progress we will be able to report more in the next 6 months.
Derek has bowel sensation and uses a suppository when needed. He has not had any accidents at all with bowel or bladder in the past 6-7 months.

Derek had severe neuro back pain which radiated into his hip prior to the OEG cell surgery with alot of spasms. This pain is now mostly gone and allows him to walk greater distances and without pain. He takes no pain killers or muscle relaxants. He is not on any medications.

We are very greatful to Dr. Huang. He is an excellent surgeon (I have been in surgery with him and have surgical experience myself) He is a kind and caring person. He will not do surgery if you are high risk with alot of medical problems (aneurysms, etc) but has performed surgery for cerival patients on ventilators.
There are risks to any surgery of getting infections. Infection and pneumonia are one of the highest complication in the USA post surgery. Dr. Huang has made it clear that this surgery is not stem cell and that it is NOT a cure. However, this surgery has improved my sons quality of life tremendously. I am offended by Dr. Dobkins negativity towards advancement with SCI/stem cell/OEG and the help that has been offered by Dr. Huang in Beijing. We have to keep pushing forward and support those who are willing to help. We are all responsible for our own decisions. We need to investigate thoroughly each physician , their surgical techniques and expertise. Progress can be slowed very quickly by those who are not informed with the truth.
I am greatful that I could go to China with my son and have the medical knowledge to avoid any problems.
Sincerely
Jenet Langjahr

Dear Corrinne
Derek did have some motor function before Dr. Huangs surgery below the injury site. He had minor control of his quads , left greater than right. He had minor and stable left L1 area and able to lock his left knee. The right has continued to be weaker than the left. However, before the surgery in China Derek had no bladder control or bowel function. As you know, the ASIA scoring can be confusing but motor function below the injury site without L5 is still considered ASIA A. Dereks spinal cord was severed by a piece of bone for 2 days before he could have surgery.
I hope this helps clarify things. There is always a debate on ASIA scoring.
