J AI RECU UN EMAIL DE LA CHINE EN ANGLAIS POURRIEZ VOUS ME LE TRADUIRE MERCIDear Mr. Munoz:
Thank you very much for your enquiry and I am so sorry to hear about your son’s case. My name is Vivian Wang and I work in the International Department at Beijing Tiantan Puhua Hospital. Our doctors have developed a comprehensive program for SCI patients combining both nerve stem cell activation and stimulation treatment, and self stem cells injections. This combined treatment has so far proved itself to be most efficient in bringing high level of recovery.
Here I would like to provide some general information of the stem cell treatment, and then I will have some questions about your son’s condition.
Treatment procedure:
1. Self Stem Cells Activation and Proliferation: Based on Neuro-endocrine-immune network theory, we treat the patients by “waking up” the sleeping stem cells through oral and IV medications. We use different medications during different processes (proliferation-inducement-differentiation), the medications always adjusted and combined; therefore, we call it ‘cocktail treatment’. This is a very integral part to the treatment and developed by our doctors at Tiantan Puhua.
2. Stem cell implantation:
1) Before injection of the stem cells, we will use medicine to ablate the glial scars.
Glial scar in a chronic injury represents a physical and molecular barrier to axonal regeneration. Before the injection of stem cells, we will use medicine to ablate the scar and create a beneficial microenvironment for the stem cells to pass through to the injury site, which is an important part to treat the chronic spinal cord injury
2) Stem cell injections: We have two options in this step. One is the use of fetal neural stem cells; the other is autologous bone marrow stem cells.
Neural stem cells are injected into the CSF (cerebral spinal fluid) by lumbar and lateral ventricle Puncture (3-4 injections of app. 3 million cells each). This procedure is usually done with local anesthesia. Yet, in order to prevent any risk of infection and keep a strictly sterile environment; the procedure is done in the operation room by a neurologist only.
· Autologous Bone marrow procedure is suggested when there is a potential immunological rejection to be expected, or when the patient is young enough. Self bone marrow is extracted from the patient’s hip, then cultured in the lab and induced into neural stem cells. Then, the cultured cells are injected back via the spinal cord fluid in 2-4 injections. Self Bone marrow stem cells implantation has no risk of rejection.
*Side effects: Both of the procedures can cause minor side effect for 2 to 3 days after the operation such as fever, headaches, dizziness and fatigue. These side effects are expected and should not alarm or concern you. Many patients do not suffer any side effects.
3. Rehabilitation: Daily rehabilitation therapy is a very much necessary part of the entire treatment regimen. Our aim, with the use of the self stem cell mobilization technique is to significantly improve brain function using signal induction in the rehabilitation training procedure. In our Rehabilitation Center we use several different types of rehabilitation methods, such as: Physical Therapy, Occupational Therapy, Speech Therapy and Traditional Chinese Medicine.
Treatment period:
The recommended period of time for treatment is 8 weeks.
Costs:
The cost of the treatment is approximately 38,000 USD for 2 months of treatment including ‘self stem cells activation treatment’ (daily cocktail of medicines), bone marrow collection, 3-4 stem cells injections, daily rehabilitation, traditional Chinese medicine treatments and accommodation for the patient and a caregiver/accompanying family member(s). The actual cost will be calculated per service and according to the actual time of stay, the medical plan and/or unexpected procedures.
Language: Our international department team helps our foreign patients to handle all the communication aspects of getting medical treatment in a foreign country.
From communicating with the medical team, the nurses and the caregivers to daily needs like shopping, going to the bank or making visa arrangements.
We will take care to pick you up from the airport and sending you back at the end of the treatment.
Evaluation process and signing up for the treatment
If your son is considering having this treatment, you will need to send us MRI images as well as brief answers to the following questions;
1. How about the bowel and bladder functions; the functions of respiration (breath) and swallowing.
2. Have you seen any improvements since his injury?
3. Has he ever received spinal fixation surgery before? What was the level of improvement?
4. If possible, please provide a short video (1-2 minutes) of the patient in his present condition. This is especially helpful to our doctors when evaluating your case.
We will then have a consultation with the doctors for evaluation and will come back to you with their answer and suggested course of action.
You can send this information by e-mail, or by regular mail to the following address:
